Patrons are limited to having 25 total items checked out on their card.

Renewal

Automatic Renewals at OPL

Items checked out to your library account will renew automatically three days prior to the due date. Loan period will be extended to their allotted timeframe.
Eligible items will renew up to four times EXCEPT WHEN:
- There is a hold on the item
- Items have reached their renewal limit
- They are Inter-Library Loan items
- They are digital items (eBooks, eAudiobooks)
- Your account is blocked due to lost or damage fees
Notices are sent via email three days prior to the due date

Can't Renew?

If you are unable to renew your items online or if automatic renewal failed for one of your items, please call (714) 288-2400 during normal business hours to speak with a customer service representative. Please have your library card number available when calling.
Be mindful of due dates by checking your account online or through the app.

Hold

Place Holds

You may place a hold on a library material that you wish to check out using our online catalog, or by downloading the OPL Mobile App for Android or iOS. When the item becomes available, you will be notified by email (if it has been provided), phone call, or U.S. Mail. Once available, the item will be held for one week at the pick up location selected.

A total of 15 holds may be placed on your library account. There is a $0.50 charge for each hold item not picked up.

You may not use your library card to place holds if any of the following conditions exist:

Your library card has been reported as lost or stolen
Your library card has expired
Your library card privileges have been blocked due to lost or damage fees
The 15 hold limit has been reached

Holds cannot be placed on materials in the following collections:

Local History
Reference
Study Guides

Fees

There is no charge to borrow any library materials.

You can sign up to receive courtesy notification emails for your account. Please call customer service at (714) 288-2400, option 3, to set up this service. Please have your library card number available to help expedite the call.

Lost Materials

Items are considered lost if they are 14 days overdue
Courtesy notices are sent when materials are 3 days past the due date to give patrons the chance to return the library material(s) to any open library location and avoid being charged a fee
If you lose an item, you will be charged a $5 processing fee in addition to the cost of the material

Collection Agency

In order to ensure the prompt return of library materials, Orange Public Library has retained the services of Collection Bureau of America. The library has the authority to submit outstanding accounts to a collection agency. The collection agency will impose additional charges to submitted accounts.

Returning Library Materials

You may return all library materials with a few exceptions [kits, items that are in-library use only] in the book drops outside the libraries 24 hours a day. Materials may also be returned inside during regular business hours through the automated check-in system at the Orange Public Library & History Center (Main Library), or in designated book drops inside the two branches.
