Using a Computer

• An Orange Public Library Card is required to use a computer. Cards are available at the Customer Service Desk.
• You may use a computer for up to 4 hours per day, depending on availability.
• If you are having technical difficulties, please ask for assistance.  Please do not shut off the computers or otherwise interfere with their operation.
• Library staff is happy to provide assistance with technical problems and basic search strategies.
• Printing is available and costs $.15 per page for black and white, $.35 per page for color.  Instructions for printing are available at all libraries.
• You may save documents, images, etc., to your own USB thumb drive.
• Please abide by the Orange Public Library Computer Internet Use Policy (10.02.2023) when using a computer.

Wi-Fi is available at all Orange Public Library locations until ten minutes prior to closing.  Hours vary by location, so be sure to check our hours of operation.  There is no charge or password for using the wireless internet. 

The Basics

You will need a Wi-Fi enabled mobile device such as a laptop, tablet, iPad or Smartphone.  Some power outlets are available in the Library, but we suggest that your device be fully charged before visiting.  For safety reasons, we do not allow charging cables to run along the floor where people may trip over them.

Filtering

The Library’s Wi-Fi is filtered.  If you need unfiltered access, you will need to log on to one of our wired Internet computers.

Is the Wi-Fi private and secure?

The City’s Wi-Fi is not encrypted.  You should be aware that information sent wirelessly may be intercepted and seen by others.  Protect your data when using any public wireless network, and avoid transmitting credit card or other sensitive information.

Library cards must be added to the SmartAlec print system before they can be used to print documents from personal devices like phones, tablets, or laptop computers.

Create a SmartAlec print system account

1. Visit the SmartAlec Print Gateway webpage by clicking this link.
2. Click the First Time User button and enter your library barcode number, PIN (birthdate), and e-mail.
3. Click the Submit button and your account will be created
4. Once the account is created, you can print from the web link, or using the SmartAlec app.

Print from a Laptop

1. Click this link and enter your library card number and PIN, then click the Log In button.
2. Click the Choose File button.
3. Browse to the file or document you want to print on your device, select the document and click Open.
4. To print a webpage, select 'print to PDF' as the printer and save to your laptop, then browse to that file and click Open from the SmartAlec web gateway.
5. Click the blue Upload button.
6. Print your document at a Print Release Station in any Orange Public Library location.  Black and white prints are .15 cents per page, color prints are .35 cents per page.
   
   (Only pdf, doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx, csv, txt, html, rtf, jpg, png, and bmp files are allowed.)

Print from iOS (Apple) Device

1. Download and install the Smart Alec @ Your Library app from the App Store.
2. Log into the app using your library card number and PIN, make sure you are connected to the Library's WiFi network.
3. Open the file or document you want to print and tap the share/action button. 
4. Tap the print icon.
5. Expand the document until the share/action button returns.
6. Tap the share/action button and select the SmartAlec app.
7. Tap Send.
8. Open the SmartAlec app on your device to confirm your document is in the queue.
9. Print your document at a Print Release Station in any Orange Public Library location.  Black and white prints are .15 cents per page, color prints are .35 cents per page.

Print from Android (Google) Device

1. Download and install the Smart Alec @ Your Library app from the Google Play Store.
2. Log into the app using your library card number and PIN, make sure you are connected to the Library's WiFi network.
3. Open the file or document you want to print and tap the More Options button.
4. Select print, then click the down arrow in the upper right corner of the screen and select SmartAlec Printer as your printer choice.
5. Tap the round printer icon, then click ok.
6. Open the SmartAlec app on your device to confirm your document is in the queue.
7. Print your document at a Print Release Station in any Orange Public Library location.  Black & White prints are .15 cents per page, color prints are .35 cents per page.

Borrow a Mobile Hotspot to Access the Internet Anywhere

A mobile hotspot is a Wi-Fi device one can use to connect a mobile-enabled device to the Internet. The hotspots are portable, and Internet service is provided. The hotspot can only be used within the continental United States. The hotspot devices are configured to ensure compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). 

Guidelines for Borrowing and Use

• Borrower must be an adult (18+ years of age) with a library card in good standing.
• Borrower must sign the Lending Agreement at each checkout.
• Borrower is responsible for the hotspot and accessories during the lending period.
• Hotspots check out for three weeks and may be renewed up to two times (contingent upon Hold requests).
• Only one hotspot may be borrowed per card at a time. 
• The hotspot must be returned in person to staff at the Lending Services desk at the Orange Public Library & History Center or One Desks at the El Modena or Taft Branch Libraries. Hotspots may not be returned in any book drop locations. Doing so may result in borrower incurring fees for any damages.

We offer laptops that can be borrowed and used inside the Orange Public Library & History Center (Main Library), El Modena, and Taft Branch Libraries for up to 4 hours each day.
 

Requirements

You must be 18 years of age or older and have a library card in good standing in order to borrow a laptop.  You must also present an official, valid photo I.D., which will be kept at the Lending Services Desk while the laptop is on loan to you.  

Software

Laptops have Windows 10 and Office 2019 installed.

We have a scanning station available at the Orange Public Library & History Center (Main Library) that was generously donated by the Orange Public Library Foundation.  You can scan documents to your email, smartphone or USB drive.  The scanning station is located upstairs in the Copy Center in Adult Services, and there is no charge for its use.

Borrow a Home Connectivity Kit 

Home Connectivity Kits are available for checkout. Each kit includes a Chromebook, a wired headset, a wired mouse, and a wireless hotspot. This all-in-one kit will help patrons apply for jobs, access homeschooling resources, or simply stay connected to information at home.

We offer portable power stations that can be borrowed and used inside the El Modena Library for up to 4 hours per day. This technology offers cord-free power to charge laptops, tablets, phones, and more. The power station features a standard AC outlet, a USB-A charging port with Quick Charge 3.0 technology, and a USB-C PD charging port.

Requirements

You must be 18 years of age or older and have a library card in good standing to borrow a portable power station.  You must also present an official, valid photo I.D., which will be kept at the Lending Services Desk while the power station is on loan to you.
