Position Overview and Impact 

The latest statistics state that one in five adults in the United States cannot read and write well enough to manage day to day reading and writing tasks such as filling out a permission slip from their child’s school, or read the directions on a medicine bottle. Help break the cycle of illiteracy by becoming a volunteer tutor in the Adult Literacy Program.


Key Responsibilites
  • Be 18 years or older and complete the tutor training 
  • Meet weekly with your student at the library 
  • Introduce literacy resources to your student 
  • Sign in and keep track of tutoring hours 


Qualifications
  • Patience and the desire to help others learn the joy and value of improved reading 
  • Commit to regular meeting times and keeping in contact with the student via phone, text, email or note card 
  • Willingness to work with students from various backgrounds
Cost
  • No cost, just your time

    Prior to tutoring, volunteers will complete a 12-hour tutor training workshop offered throughout the year. All tutors are expected to obtain a library card and encourage their students to get one also.

    An orientation to the library will be given by a staff person, covering the various resources in the library. Tutors will be notified of any in-service workshops that would supplement their tutoring skills.

Time Commitment
  • The Reading Lab on the second floor of the Main Library and History Center is open for tutoring during business hours.
  • Tutoring days and times are mutually agreed upon by the tutor and the student, but a minimum of 2 hours a week are encouraged.
  • Tutoring can be worked around vacations and extended leaves. 
Length of Commitment
  • Six months is preferred
  • Tutors may volunteer as long as they would like provided they remain a volunteer in good standing. 

Requirements

All Literacy volunteers are required to be drug screened and fingerprinted before they can tutor at the Orange Public Library. This process is paid for by the City of Orange. City policy prohibits the library from accepting court-referred volunteers.
